President's Message

Wow! What a great turnout for Local Officer's Training on January 13! It meant so much to have such a wonderful group for this event. I send a special thank you to the ladies at Main Street who welcomed us all and were such gracious hostesses. I do hope those attending were able to glean information that will be helpful as you carry out your responsibilities in your local unit. Please do not hesitate to call on me or your District counterpart for needed assistance at any time throughout the year!

Looking to the future, I hope to see many of you at the annual Church Women United's Bible Study on Friday, February 8 at 10:00 at Wesley Memorial UMC. On Saturday, February 23 we will have the opportunity to be together at our District's Day Apart at Platt Springs United Methodist Church. The theme I Am My Sister's Keeper will be lead by the Reverend Dr. Arnetta Elizabeth Beverly and I am sure it will be meaningful to all attending. I encourage you to bring a group from your church and enjoy this day with us. Dr. Beverly comes to us from the Western North Carolina Conference where she serves as their Director of Connectional Ministries. She was also a candidate for the Episcopacy from that Conference! Please see the registration form in this issue of Gleanings. Let's not forget Capitol Day...Monday, March 3 at Ashland United Methodist Church! This Conference sponsored event is always very informative and the ladies at Ashland are looking forward to hosting us! Let's try to have a great turnout for this event from our District!! Also, ladies, there is a form in this issue of Gleanings for the Spiritual Growth Retreat in May. Get those forms in early in order for your first choice of lodging to be honored! Come and be enriched and inspired as Dr. Vivia Fowler leads our weekend! She is wonderful! You will not want to miss her! It is my prayer that we will encourage one another about attending district and conference events and in so doing will become closer as a district and as a conference with our UMW sisters. The events planned always feed us spiritually, challenge us to new areas of service, and empower us with knowledge about United Methodist Women and our mission in the world.

A word to I ocal Presidents, If, your unit has not filled out the form for Local Unit Officers and sent copies to Carole Ready and Desiree Smith. PLEASE do it immediately!!! As of Officers' Training we had a little over half of our units reporting! We want to continue sending Gleanings to you and keep you informed so we need your unit's roster in order to do this! Also Desiree needs these so that she can give the local officers names to their District counterparts! ( If you were not able to be at the District Training and would like a copy of what I gave to the presidents, please let me know.)

A reminder that February is Wallace Family Life Special Emphasis Month! This worthwhile mission depends entirely on South Carolina United Methodist Women for its support. Please be generous and when possible give beyond the required amount per member. Please remember that we need to contribute $5.00 per member per year. I currently have four copies of Pass the Plate Cookbook...let me know if you need them! (796-8014)

Betty Comer is my representative on the Bethlehem Community Center Board and she reported at Officer Training about the success of the Walk –A-Thon this year! Let us keep Bethlehem Center in our prayers as well as the new director as they move forward in their mission. They need our prayers and our support. Please call the Center and see where you may be of service to them.

In the coming year the goal of our District Team is to hold Cluster meetings with Clusters 3 and 4 and Clusters 5 and 6. Clusters 1 and 2 met in 2007. We encourage your unit officers as well as your members at large to be a part of these cluster meetings. It will be a time to get to know each other better, to share ideas among our sister churches and to share information from the district and conference. Your Cluster Leaders will be in touch!

Please note that there is a scholarship form in this Gleanings for ladies in the Columbia District who wish to attend the School of Christian Mission in Spartanburg July 24-27. If you know of someone in your unit who would like to go, but may need some financial assistance, please encourage her to apply!

Before the Gleanings is published again we will have journeyed through the Lenten Season, Holy Week, and celebrated our Risen Lord on Easter and will have been inspired at Day Apart, informed about advocating for our children and youth, and will have been renewed spiritually at our Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska! As we experience each of these events in our lives may we find that we have grown deeper in our walk with the Lord and have found more ways to serve Him!

May you continue to work for Christ serving His people with hearts full or love and joy! As always, if I may be of service to you or your unit, please be in touch. I welcome the opportunity to visit your unit at any time.

Blessings to you, dear sisters!

FLO JOHNSON
